How to choose a dog door.

With so many options on the Denver Colorado market it can be tough to pick a dog door. There are single flap dog doors and double flap dog doors. Some have rigid flaps while others have flexible flaps. The price can vary from the budget friendly PetSafe doors found at Petsmart, Home Depot and other places to expensive pet doors like Security Boss and Hale Pet Doors. The more expensive the dog door the longer it will last. PetSafe products seem to fall apart around one year old while some of the higher end models can last the life of your home.

There is also the question of where to have the dog door. Should it go through a wall? Should it go through a door? The answer is based on what is available in your home but from my experience, go with an in glass option. If you have a sliding glass patio door, a french door with glass or any door with glass this is the best option. I like in glass dog doors because they are removable so it's perfect if you are renting.

Step 1: Decide on a budget

Picking the cheapest options isn't always a good idea. Think about how many years you plan on using the dog door. Most people will want a dog door to last many years.

Petsafe is a low cost option but it only has one flap and is made out of plastic.

Hale is a more expensive option but it's very energy efficient and secure. It's double flapped and made out of metal.

Step 2: Pick the placement

There are pet doors for walls, doors, screens and glass. Deciding on the placement is a personal judgement call but I strongly suggest sliding patio doors because they are a non-permanent option. I used Pet Door Pro to install my dog door through my patio door.

Step 3: Install it yourself or hire a professional

Installation of the pet door can be time consuming and require special skills. If you have the time and the skills required to install it yourself then you can skip this step. If you are like most people and want to hire someone then there are lots of options. I used Pet Door Pro for my dog door and they were great. They backed up their install with a warranty and provided prompt installation.
